Research Interests

My research interests are in the area of Sustainable Development with a particular focus on social psychological approaches to encouraging behaviour change particularly in relation to waste and transport. Co-investigator on interdisciplinary project examining the links between lifestyle, societal values and energy consumption; public attitudes to waste and waste minimisation behaviour; influencing and evaluating of recycling behaviour; public attitudes to global climate change; transport, air pollution and health; conflict on shared-use routes; driver behaviour and accident prevention; evaluation of an experimental contra-flow cycling scheme; development and evaluation of innovatory methods for traffic calming in environmentally sensitive areas; social exclusion and sustainability; innovative approaches to environmental education; methods for encouraging public participation in community planning; Risk and Crime and the environment: - risk and people’s behaviour in emergency situations; crime, safety and security at international railway stations; views of minority groups on crime and crime hotspots; environmental quality, risk assessment and perception of crime. Risk perception and communication in respect zoonotic diseases in forests amongst visitors and forest workers. Architecture: - assessing the visual impact of buildings; evaluating the planning, design, management and use of retail and leisure environments, including post-occupancy evaluation. Heritage and Environmental Interpretation and Education: - planning, design, management and visitor use and evaluation of museums and interpretive facilities; social and place identity processes and attitudes towards the heritage; affective/emotional aspects of heritage interpretation.
