Work History
Prior to Clinical Psychology training I had a varied career in teaching, commerce and industry. Since training in the 1980’s I have worked with adults in the NHS in London and Surrey and in private practice. In both my private and NHS work I have taught and supervised extensively as well as seeing clients. I also ran a consultancy company early in my career.
Current Clinical Work
I am a Director of Primary Care Psychology and Counselling, a company that contracts directly into the NHS through a Primary Care Trust.
I work in private practice in Guildford where I offer long term psychoanalytic psychotherapy and short term Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). I also offer consultation and supervision and am registered as a supervisor with BAPPS (British Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Supervisors).
My Role on the Course
I have been a member of the Course Team since 2001. I have worked in a dual role as a senior clinical and academic tutor since 2003. This reflects my commitment to teaching and curriculum delivery as well as the development of therapeutic competences and trainees’ professional development. The role is varied and similar to that of many of the tutors, but my particular responsibilities are:
- Developing delivering the psychoanalytic psychotherapy part of the PsychD curriculum
- Teaching skills in developing the therapeutic relationship.
- Developing and delivering supervisor training with other team members
- The day-to-day running of the Honorary Clinical Tutor Scheme.
- Developing the Personal Interview in the Selection process and training selectors
Research Interests
- Attachment theory in adults
- Eating disorders, particularly obesity
- I am involved in a research group with Laura Simonds that is investigating interpersonal and dynamic factors in OCD
- I am hoping to develop outcome research in IPT in the future.
